Max Scherzer is a three-time Cy Young Award winner, an eight-time All-Star, and a two-time 20-game winner who’s led the league in strikeouts three times and WAR twice. 

As the calendar speeds towards the promise of spring, there’s still a possibility that 41-year-old righty will return for a 19th season in 2026, after posting a 2-2 record and a 5.19 ERA with the Toronto Blue Jays in 2025 (and providing a spark in the World Series).

Contenders Can Always Use Veteran Ace

Given the way that Scherzer performed for Toronto in the postseason, with a 1-0 record across 14.1 innings pitched for the Jays as they made it within an out of a title, it seems like the veteran ace still has some gas left in the tank.  

Along the way, Scherzer became the first pitcher in MLB history to start a playoff game for six different teams, doing so in his first start of the postseason against the Seattle Mariners in the ALCS before toeing the rubber twice against the Dodgers in the World Series.  

That’s why we’re not ruling out a return to baseball in 2026 for the three-time Cy Young winner, with the Jays sitting atop our Scherzer odds board at +275, followed by the San Francisco Giants (+350), New York Mets (+550), Detroit Tigers (+600) and Arizona Diamondbacks (+700).  

A stop with the Mets, Tigers or D’backs would turn back the clock for ‘Mad Max,’ as Scherzer started his MLB career in Arizona, going 9-13 over two seasons in the Valley between 2008 and 2009 before being shipped to the Motor City in 2010.  

In Detroit, Scherzer turned the corner on his career, going 82-35 with a 3.52 ERA and taking home his first Cy Young in 2013, while accumulating 21.4 WAR (per Baseball-Reference.com) during his time with the Tigers.  

Scherzer’s career with the Mets was much shorter, lasting for less than two seasons and going 20-9 with a 3.02 ERA before being traded to the Texas Rangers in 2023, though there’s no reason to believe that New York brass would turn a cold shoulder on their former ace pitcher this go-round.  

While Max has never pitched for the Giants, he has won 121 of his 221 games as a member of the Senior Circuit, racking up those victories with the D’backs, Washington Nationals and Mets over the years.  

While we wait to see if the nagging back injuries that have cut his seasons short ultimately propels Scherzer to hang up the cleats for good remains to be seen, what we know right now is that the long-time ace is taking his sweet time to decide what he wants to do next, potentially adding to the $345 million he’s earned over his MLB career in 2026.
