Where Will Kyler Murray Go Next?
Murray’s market changed fast. Arizona informed Murray on March 3 that it plans to release him at the start of the new league year on March 11, barring a last-minute trade, which effectively turns this from a trade story into a free-agency race.
Why Minnesota Makes Sense
The early chatter has centered most heavily on Minnesota, with ESPN’s combine buzz and other recent reporting keeping the Vikings near the top of the list. The Jets and Steelers have also been repeatedly mentioned as teams monitoring the situation, while Miami still makes sense as a secondary fit if its own quarterback dominoes fall.
A move to Minnesota would make the most sense, as the Vikings are likely to look for an outside QB1 option after J.J. McCarthy’s tepid first season as the team’s starter.
In total, the former 10th overall pick out of Michigan threw for more interceptions (12) than touchdowns (11) for the Vikings in 10 games, making free agents like Murray even more attractive.
In Murray’s case, injuries limited his on-field action to five games, though he did amass nearly the same approximate value in those games as McCarthy did in twice the contests, per the team at pro-football-reference.com.
Jets, Steelers In the Mix
While the Vikings are our top Murray suitor, at +275, the New York Jets (+450) and Pittsburgh Steelers (+500) should be considered strong contenders as well, as the former will likely move on from starter Justin Fields in 2026 while the latter awaits veteran Aaron Rodgers decision regarding the 2026 season.
Fields struggled mightily to stay healthy for New York in 2025, playing in nine games and throwing for 1,259 yards and seven touchdowns (to one interception) in nine games, though he appears to be on the outs in The Meadowlands after going 2-7 in those contests.
Rodgers played well enough for the Steelers last year, going 10-6 in 16 starts with an AV of 12 (per pro-football-reference.com) in those contests, throwing for 3,322 yards and 24 touchdowns to seven interceptions for Pittsburgh.
The issue, as stated above, is Rodgers age, with the 42-year-old being no sure thing to return for a 23rd NFL campaign this fall, which could force first-year Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy to look for a new option under center this fall.

Kyler Murray Contract Details
One thing that’ll help whichever team signs Murray is the fact that the Cardinals are still on the hook for the Heisman winner’s $36.8 million contract for 2026, meaning his next employer will likely be able to pay him the league minimum in 2026.
That salary cap friendly contract could entice the Vikings, Jets and Steelers to dive into the Murray sweepstakes, while also prodding teams with their own QB controversies like the Miami Dolphins (+800) and Atlanta Falcons (+1000) to make a move as well.
In Miami’s case, the future of former first round pick Tua Tagovailoa is going to be front and center this offseason, with the 28-year-old under contract through 2028, though the AFC East club could pull off a similar move to Arizona and release him outright.
The Falcons must ponder what they’ll do with former Indiana and Washington Huskies star Michael Penix Jr., as the eighth pick in the 2024 NFL Draft has gone 4-8 as Atlanta’s starter in two seasons with the club.
Regardless of which NFL GM snaps up Murray this offseason, the 2019 AP Offensive Rookie of the Year’s time in the Valley has come to an end, with the Cardinals opting to start fresh under center this fall after watching the man affectionately known as ‘K1’ go 38-48-1 across 87 games played.
