After starting the NFL’s silly season with 10 head coaching openings (nine via firings and one coming from Mike Tomlin stepping down in Pittsburgh), three of them remain, including the head coaching job with the Cleveland Browns.

Who Replaces Kevin Stefanski in Cleveland?  

With the Browns, Las Vegas Raiders and Arizona Cardinals being the three NFL clubs still on the lookout for their next head coach, it seems like we should get resolution to the club’s search soon.

Who Makes Sense in Cleveland?  

 Two of those candidates have previous NFL head coaching experience, with Schwartz going 29-51 with the then-woebegone Detroit Lions from 2009 to 2013, while Lynn put up a 33-31 mark with the Los Angeles Chargers over four seasons from 2017 to 2020.  

Scheelhaase has risen up the ranks from his humble beginnings as a football operations guy with Illinois (where he played quarterback), moving up to become the offensive coordinator at Iowa State in 2023 before accepting an offensive assistant & passing game coordinator role under Sean McVay in 2024.  

The 35-year-old Iowa native would be the junior statesman on our Browns odds board, being 24 years younger than Monken, who has been an assistant at the NCAA or NFL level since starting as a graduate assistant at Grand Valley State in 1989.  

Other than a three-year run as the head coach at Southern Miss from 2013 to 2015, Monken’s always been an assistant on the offensive side of the ball, jumping around to the Buccaneers, Browns and Georgia Bulldogs from 2016 to 2022, before joining John Harbaugh’s staff in the Charm City in 2023.  

While in Athens, Monken helped guide the Bulldogs to consecutive CFP titles in 2021 and 2022, while also taking home Conference-USA Coach of the Year honors will leading the Golden Eagles way back in 2015.  

Regardless of who gets the nod to replace Stefanski, Cleveland will need a new leader on the sidelines this fall, with the AFC North franchise looking to snap two-year postseason drought when the ball gets rolling on the 2026 NFL league year.
