The College Football Season enters Week 3 with some familiar names facing uncertain futures as the CFB Coaching Hot Seat simmers and First College Football Coach Fired Odds continues to evolve.

Our board has flipped on itself in the past two weeks. The top three coaches preseason panels flagged as being planted in hottest seats in the country — FSU's Mike Norvell, Baylor's Dave Aranda, Wisconsin's Luke Fickell — lost the exact game that was supposed to define their season. Yet, all remain employed.

Meanwhile two names nobody had on the original list, Greg Schiano of Rutgers and Clemson's Dabo Swinney, ran head-first into early season disasters. Both moved to the top of our list.

Still, no one's been fired.

Yet.

New to the board and now the favorite. Rutgers lost at home to UMass (a 29.5-point underdog that hadn't beaten a Power Four team since joining FBS) 37-21, then lost 28-21 at a Boston College team that went 2-10 last year. Schiano's buyout is roughly $18.5M — a fraction of what the other top names cost, which is exactly why this profile produces in-season firings.

Also new to the board. Clemson opened with a 51-10 blowout loss to Lane Kiffin's LSU — the program's most lopsided loss since 2000 — before rebounding past Georgia Southern 22-7. Swinney's $57M buyout has a descending flat-rate structure, meaning it's actually cheaper for Clemson to fire him during 2026 ($57M) than to wait until 2027 ($60M in total comp).

The preseason favorite slips to #3 after a mixed two weeks. FSU lost the ACC opener to SMU 27-24 at home, going just 2-of-15 on third down. A bye week buys time before a trip to No. 13 Alabama on Sept. 19, with Louisville and Miami still looming on the road in October. Buyout stays north of $50M through the end of 2026.

Baylor blew a late lead and lost 17-16 to Auburn in the opener, then beat Prairie View A&M 44-3 to get to 1-1. A failed game-winning two-point conversion attempt against Auburn drew extra scrutiny. Colorado and TCU remain the games Aranda realistically needs.

Wisconsin led Notre Dame 13-10 at half in the Week 0 showcase at Lambeau Field, then got outscored 28-3 after the break in a 41-13 loss. The Badgers bounced back to beat Western Illinois. Fickell still has the softest remaining schedule of this top group — no Ohio State, Indiana, Oregon, or Michigan in Big Ten play.

UNC beat TCU 15-10 in Dublin — its first-ever win over a Big 12 team — then blew out ETSU 35-3 to open 2-0, a sharp reversal from a 4-8 debut season. But the program remains under serious investigation.

MTSU opened 38-14 over Murray State, then lost 28-26 at Marshall after a late touchdown and failed two-point try, sitting 1-1 heading into C-USA play. Group of Five buyouts run far smaller than Power Four deals, which is exactly why in-season changes happen faster at this level — UAB's Trent Dilfer was let go midseason in 2025 for the same reason.

New to the board, with the most volatile two weeks of anyone here. NC State lost 34-8 at Virginia — Doeren's first loss to the Cavaliers since 1996, snapping a 30-year NC State win streak in Charlottesville — then answered with a school-record 73-0 win over Richmond. Buyout is in the $12–13M range, well below the top tier.

History shows a surprise midseason firing at a program outside the preseason radar happens almost every year — last year it was Trent Dilfer at UAB.

Greg Schiano Feels The Heat At Rutgers

The shortest odds on our First College Football Coach Fired Odds belongs to Greg Schiano at Rutgers. The 0-2 Scarlet Knights delivered Big Ten losses to Boston College and UMass - meaning that the only two FBS schools in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts hold bragging rights over the alleged "Best Conference In Football."

Rutgers entered the UMass loss as 29.5-point home favorites. The Minutemen has never beaten a Power Four schools. Nonetheless, the Knights ignited fireworks after the loss.

Schiano's buyout — about $18.5 million, paid as roughly three-quarters of his remaining salary — is far cheaper than what the other top names on the board would cost to remove, and that gap is exactly why a shaky loss matters more here than it would somewhere else.

Especially in a conference like the Big Ten.

Things may get even uglier this week after the No. 25-ranked USC Trojans invade Northern New Jersey on Saturday afternoon.

Maryland's Mike Locksley and the Terps are 2-0 and out of the basement in the Big Ten. Thank you Rutgers.

Dabo Swinney May Be On The Clock At Clemson

Clemson got demolished 51-10 in the other Death Valley by LSU in its season opener. That loss - Clemson's worse since the last century - equally served as a metaphor for the coaching and team-building style of Dabo Swinney vs. that of Lane Kiffin. The Tigers recovered in 22-7 win over Georgia Southern. This week, Swinney gets another crack at Bill Belichick and the unbeaten North Carolina Tar Heels. A win over UNC silences all until the end of the season.

But a loss looms as potentially Swinney's final at Clemson.

In terms of the buyour, Clemson would pay less to fire Swinney now, during the 2026 season, than to wait until his contract's next tier kicks in for 2027. There's been nothing reported or hinted in that direction. But the option is thee.

Can Bill Belichick Buy Time in Chapel Hill?

Belichick's Tar-Heels moved to a 2-0 start with solid wins over Texas-Christian and East Tennessee State, all the while tuning up for the ACC schedule. UNC's defense is no pushover. Its first ACC test comes Saturday at noon in the other Death Valley at noon against Clemson.

Expect panic to set in regardless of the outcome. Belichick's program remains under investigation for a couple different issues.

First College Football Coach Fired Odds: Frequently Asked Questions

Has any FBS coach actually been fired in 2026?

No. Through Week 2, none of the coaches on the preseason or updated hot-seat boards have been dismissed. The earliest realistic firing window for the top names is generally viewed as November, once buyout math shifts further in each school's favor

What is Mike Norvell's buyout at Florida State?

Norvell's buyout was reported at roughly $58 million if Florida State had moved on after the 2025 season. That figure decreases but stays above $50 million once the 2026 season concludes.

What is Greg Schiano's buyout at Rutgers?

Schiano's buyout is roughly $18.5 million, paid as 76.875% of his remaining salary. That's well below the buyouts owed to Florida State's Mike Norvell or Wisconsin's Luke Fickell, which is part of why Rutgers' 0-2 start has drawn more in-season speculation than records at some Power Four programs with bigger names.

What is Luke Fickell's buyout at Wisconsin?

Fickell's contract carries a buyout reported near $25 million, which is widely cited as the main reason Wisconsin retained him after back-to-back losing seasons.

Will Clemson fire Dabo Swinney?

Clemson has not moved on Swinney. His contract carries a descending flat-rate buyout — $57 million if fired during 2026, versus $60 million in total compensation starting in 2027 — meaning it's technically cheaper for the school to act now than to wait, but no decision has been made.

Do Group of Five coaches get fired faster than Power Four coaches?

Often, yes. Smaller buyouts at Group of Five programs make in-season changes financially easier, which is why coaches like Middle Tennessee's Derek Mason carry real first-fired risk despite coaching a smaller program.
