For hockey fans all over North America, NHL betting is heating up just as temperatures are cooling.

Speculation is especially heated for the northwesternmost team in the league.

For weeks, there has been talk about whether the Vancouver Canucks will move All-Star defenseman Quinn Hughes. We have assembled these odds for where the 26-year-old Canucks captain will play next if Vancouver deals him, or if he’ll stay put in British Columbia.

Which Teams Are Most Interested In Quinn Hughes?

Elliotte Friedman of Canada’s Sportsnet has reported that the Detroit Red Wings have had talks with the Canucks regarding a possible trade for Hughes, the 2023-24 Norris Trophy winner as the NHL’s best defenseman.

This has been a lost season for the Canucks (11-15-3), who entered Tuesday’s play with 25 points, the second fewest in the league under new head coach Adam Foote. Vancouver surely seems headed for its ninth season out of the playoffs in the past 11 years.

Detroit, on the other hand, is surging. The Red Wings (16-11-3) lead a tight Atlantic Division race with 35 points. Acquiring Hughes, though it is sure to come at a steep price, might push the Wings toward contention – not only for their first playoff spot since 2016, but for a deep run if they get there.

The New Jersey Devils are another candidate to nab the star defenseman, according to Friedman, and they have an edge: New Jersey already has Quinn’s two brothers on its NHL roster. Center Jack Hughes and defenseman Luke Hughes have been teammates in Newark since 2022-23. Jack is on the injured list after injuring his hand; he last played on Nov. 12.

One major factor might be current salary cap space. According to Spotrac.com data, the Red Wings are third in available cap space this season, with about $12.475 million available. The Devils are just over the $99.5 million cap maximum already, meaning they’d have to dump some contracts to make a potential deal work to acquire the eldest Hughes brother.

DraftKings Sportsbook lists the Devils at +2200 odds to win the 2026 Stanley Cup.

Other Contenders To Get Quinn Hughes

The Philadelphia Flyers (+700 on our board) entered Tuesday’s play just a point out of a wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference and with games in hand compared to most other contenders. In their first season under former Canucks head coach and former longtime Flyers player Rick Tocchet, Philly seeks to end a five-year playoff drought.

Conclusion

Quinn Hughes is a top defenseman, but his presence isn’t making his team any good at preventing goals. Vancouver is allowing 3.6 goals per game, the worst average in the NHL. He’s the type of player that franchises want to build around, but how long will it take for the Canucks to become competitive, and a decent play for NHL futures betting?

Those are among the questions that surround any potential deal for Hughes, who has two goals and 20 assists in 25 games during the 2025-26 season. With a minus-9 rating, he’s on pace to surpass his worst career plus/minus number (minus-24 in 2020-21).
