The expansion of the World Cup to 48 teams means that, on paper, some of the more traditionally big teams have easier rides to the round of 32 and knockouts than might have been the case previously. That most certainly looks the case in Group G as Belgium look the hot favourites to go through as group winners.
They are joined in the group by Egypt, Iran and New Zealand. With potentially up to three teams to make it out of the group, every team has a live chance to go deep in the tournament, even if most betting sites see Belgium as the comfortable favourites to finish top.
However, given they didn’t make it out of the group stage in Qatar four years ago, there could be an opportunity for one of the other teams to finish top. Their Qatar disappointment followed a third-place finish at the 2018 World Cup, and there is a suggestion that this team is past its best.

That could mean Mo Salah and Egypt are rivals for top spot. They made the semi-finals of this year’s African Cup of Nations but would have to defy fairly hefty history to make it out of their group. Indeed, the nation have never made it out of the group stages. Given, this is only the fourth World Cup they have qualified for, perhaps it isn’t as bad a record as it may seem on paper. In 2018, the last World Cup they qualified for, they finished bottom of their group with three defeats from three.
Iran qualified for their fourth consecutive World Cup and seventh overall. They have also never made it out of the group stage but have at least been competitive in recent tournaments. Given the current global climate, there is still uncertainty as to how Iran fare in the US, but all things being equal, they have enough quality to ruffle some feathers and make it out of the group and aren’t completely ruled out by top betting apps.
The one team that might be are New Zealand. The All Whites are appearing at their third-ever World Cup and have to compete against cricket and rugby as national sports in a nation of just five million. The fact they have named a 36-year-old Tommy Smith, who was part of a Braintree team who just got relegated from the National League, in their World Cup squad attests to their lack of depth. However, in Nottingham Forest forward Chris Wood, they have a player who knows how to find the back of the net.

Group G Betting Tips
Belgium are expected to top this group if the odds are to be believed. However, they aren’t the team they once were and could be there for the taking. In World Cup qualifying, Belgium drew twice with North Macedonia and also once against a 10-man Kazakhstan. In their Nations League group in 2024, they failed to win any of their final five games against France, Italy and Israel.
Egypt would like the Mo Salah of old to turn up, and if he does, they will have a chance of winning this group. Iran and New Zealand are winnable games, and Belgium a weakening force. All of which means there is value to be had.
Bet on Egypt to win Group G at 9/2 with Sky Bet.
